Andres Fahsen is a 5th generation coffee producer of the agro-forest farm, Finca Patzibir, located in the Atitlán region near Volcan Tolimán. Andres’s first memories were made on the farm with his family. He hopes that one day his daughter will be the 6th generation producer of their family. When he speaks about his family's lineage and the cultivation of this farm, Andres extends his arm excitedly and exclaims that his family has coffee in their blood. He takes pride in Patzibir’s ability to employ workers from the region providing a liveable wage and a familial work atmosphere. He provides working benefits for his employees that are not common in most Guatemalan coffee farms. Andrés also has a passion for sustainable, organic agro-forestry farming in order to protect and preserve the sublime land and life on the farm for generations to come. Patzibir is a Kaqchikel word meaning “where the Tzibir tree is”. A lot of the nature shade trees in the farm are Tzibir trees. In between the lowlands and the highland in the Atitlán region, there are high levels of humidity and many places where the clouds and the forests meet to make a climate specific to this area of Guatemala. Andrés Fahsen demonstrates his outstanding managerial techniques through the unique amount of spacing between rows of coffee plants, the precise use of shading in accordance with the region’s climate, and the planned harvesting timeline based on the first flowering. The Atitlán region’s climate is classified by cloudy, moist days with little sun. For this reason few shade trees are found on the plantation to allow direct sunlight to the coffee plants. The plant rows are spaced slightly farther apart than traditional farms. This lets the sun reach the bottom branches so the entire plant is productive. Due to the mountainous topography, the coffee is planted on a terracing system. In between the rows and terraces, Andrés planted grasses that help prevent the degradation of soil and drain water during heavy rainfall. When the top of this grass is cut, the roots decompose adding key components to the soil making it loose and full of live nutrients. Organic matter provides 100% live coverage on this farm.
